The KEY to breaking up government control over the lives of American Citizens is:
1) REPEAL the 16th Amendment , and get rid of Capital Gains, Income, and Wage Taxation
go to a 10% national sales tax which is in keeping with article I sections 8 & 9 of the Constitution.
2) Privatize Social Security and make it totally voluntary.
3) Dissolve the Federal Reserve System and return control of our monetary system to the Congress
as set forth in our Constitution.
We also need to repeal the 17th Amendment.
Put the control over our Senators back into the state houses. It's a lot easier for me to drive to my state capital and rip my local rep than it is to drive to DC to meet with someone who could care less who I am, one in a state of 3 million. Before the 17th Amendment, Senators actually listened to their constituents because they knew they could be gotten rid of by the state legislature.
After the 17th was passed, being an elected official in DC became a lifelong career. The founders wanted government service to be a few terms and then go back to their life and career that they had before. As it should be. Look what career politicians have done to this country.
The REAL solution is single term limits.
One 5 year term for representatives
One 7 year term for senators
One 9 year term for the President & Vice President

Senators DO NOT HAVE CONSTITUENTS! NEVER HAVE! NEVER WERE SUPPOSED TO! NEVER WILL!
Senators before the 17th Amendment were NOT representatives of the People. They were there in the House, specifically NOT to be politicians; thus the appointed status. Politicians are ELECTED! Senators were APPOINTED! And for that very reason. So they would not turn into bought and paid for politicians. They are supposed to be state Representatives, responsible to their respective LEGISLATURES, NOT THE PEOPLE!

And, being a life-long politician was a phenomenon in existence long before Senators became so. Term limits have never existed; save for the President.
No, the 17th did not CREATE career politicians; the real problem with the 17th is that it removed one of the most important and most poignant protections Americans had with respect to the "Career Politicians" of whom you speak.
It took trusted STATE representatives, who were responsible to the interests of the state; and who with the drop of a hat could be replaced, and turned them into nothing more than ANOTHER career politician. Not the first kind ever.
You do not appear to understand how our checks and balances were constructed and why. That's OK though. I'll LARN YA. (spelling intentional).
You see, the states have interests that have NOTHING to do with the everyday and immediate concerns of The People. For instance, whether their rivers and streams are being polluted by another state before they get to the state in question. Toll roads, or taxes from one state to another Re: imports and exports. Issues like the border states have that say Colorado is less likely to concern themselves with.

You are correct however about having your Representative being local and within reasonable driving distance. But that guy IS ELECTED. He is supposed to be responsible to the People. He is called in fact a Representative for that reason.

I assume this was about the federal level positions you wrote (not states) So then the FED SENATORS are RESPONSIBLE for making sure the DOJ and FBI and other FEDERAL depts. are doing their jobs (formerly offices)....
this would be similar to state senators beings held accountable for state depts. doing their jobs.
Then why do we all get the same excuse "we are separate branches of the government" therefore can't do anything go get legal counsel? Funny most of those people in any legislative branch is an attorney? It is called a CONFLICT OF INTEREST. Their first allegiance is to the BAR....

Go back, study the real tax and its real unlawful position, not an IRS which uses unlawful courts to take money and place people into their court system! Today's Corporation Prisons demand a 90% occupancy rate.
Roads and bridges are old and need repair because the monies from gasoline taxes is stolen by their respective governments to buy a federal system to incarcerate you, as well as a police system to control you.

We are the Republic; "they", the federal government are now the enemy. They are at war with us and we had all better learn how to secure our freedoms before they win.
At Court today a prosecutor backed up because a person knew the law and was willing to press forward with his knowledge; and the Judge knowing this told the prosecutor to renegotiate his standing. I saw this and it tells me that with the knowledge we gain through study we can win.
The gun haters know that gun control has never been about crime. It has always been about people control. They know they cannot rule an armed populace. Make sure your congress critters know where you stand and try to get them to stand with you. Some will, some won't. Explain to them the line in the sand you will not cross.

One nit to pick. The number of people killed by their own governments in the 20th century was well over 200 million. Stalin alone killed over 50 million.
