At the Constitutional Convention there was a battle between the large and the small states. The large states wanted to control the Congress and the Presidency and the small states feared that there they would become victims of democracy,

The large states want the President to be directly elected by the people which would give the large states a numerical majority, The small states wanted Congress to choose the President.

The founders came up with a compromise that satisfied both the large and small states. The solution became known as the Electoral College. Each state was given one Presidential elector for each of the state's Congressional representatives,

The electors would be chosen the legislature of the states and would vote to elect the President. The electors were non-partisan and were chosen based on the honesty, integrity and their wisdom.
