I don't think it says anything about marriage at all. And I am reasonably convinced they didn't anticipate what is happening now. I don't see how they could. In any event I believe the states have the right to make such decisions.
The Declaration of Independence guarantees that we have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, It doesn't indicate that we have a right to mandate how other people should live their lives or how they should be required to pursue happiness. Marriage is an unalienable right and it is also a contract. The Constitution forbids the government from infringing on an individuals right to contract.
