Lincoln Didn't Save the Union

The Treaty of Paris which ended  the American Revolution was was signed by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and John Jay who were representing the thirteen independent colonies in North America and the representatives of the King of England.

The United States was not nation, it was a union of colonies united for their protection and mutual benefit. The government created by the Constitution was a Federal government with the power being shared between the states and central government.

The representatives of 12 or the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia to create a more perfect union. In order to secure the blessings of liberty to themselves and their posterity they decided to establish a republic rather than a democracy.

They understood that in democracies ,the will of the majority could  violate the rights of minorities. They understood that in order to prevent the abuse of power by the central government, the states delegated to the central government a short list of enumerated powers and retained all powers not delegated to the government of the United States.

The union was dissolved in 1865 when it was replaced by a national government. The states lost their sovereignty and the people's God-given rights became privileges granted to them by the government of the United States.

Abraham Lincoln, who is credited with saving the Union actually destroyed the Union, and was responsible for the deaths of over 600,000 Americans

Popular Sovereignty sounds great, but what it really means is that a majority has the power to get what it wants at the expense of minorities.

In his farewell address George Washington warned us of the inherent danger of political factions and discouraged the creation of political parties.
