When the people are not adequately represented the result is the loss of liberty, equality and justice. When the people are under represented tyrants benefit and the people suffer.
The first colonial legislature in the North American Colonies was the House of Burgesses established in 1619. At that time 22 men were elected to represent a population of 2,400.
In 1776 the population of Virginia was 595,034 and they had 126 representatives or one representative for every 4,722 people. In 1787 state of Virginia had 752.000 people being represented by 126 legislators or one representative for every
5,975. Today, Virginia has a population of over 8 million, but only has 14 more state representatives than they did in 1787.
