In a true democracy the people would directly vote for their President, but in a republic the representatives of the people would elect the President.

Our founding fathers chose an indirect method of electing the President and a republican form of government because they believed that a tyranny of the majority would jeopardize the very survival of the nation,

The men who wrote the Constitution did not trust the uninformed masses with the task of electing the President. They believed that representatives of people should elect the President.

They believed that former signers of the Declaration of Independence and the men that attended the Constitutional Convention should be the ones to elect the President.

If was their opinion that trusting the masses would lead to the election of inferior candidates.
