Every form of government instituted by the minds of men has divided the people into two unequal classes. The first class consists of a ruling class and the second one, of subjects.
In theory our Constitution was based on the premise that all men are created equal. In practice nothing could be further from the truth. If all men were created equal, why were Negroes only 3/5ths human and the institution of slavery sanctioned by the government?
Our Constitution created a political hierarchy that made it possible for the few to exploit the many. The Constitution created a form of government that was supposed to secure the blessings of liberty to everyone, not just to an oligarchy of rich white men. I am sorry that they failed to secure liberty to all. We the people have allowed our government to become a den of thieves.
The Constitution has failed to protect us, because we have failed to defend it.

The Constitution is not powerless to prevent what has happened, but rather the people have failed to find a way to exercise their Constitutional prerogative and hold out elected officials' feet to the fire. In over 200 years we still haven't found a good way to do that. I suspect that is because the framers of the Constitution figured that future elected officials would share their high ideals, their integrity, their faith in God, and their morality. Boy, were they wrong.
"The Constitution has failed to protect us, because we have failed to defend it."
well said Charles.
The Constitution does not need to be amended, but it does need to be defended.
With all do respect, Professor... Our Constitution has, been subverted and desperately needs correction.
The 14th & 16th Amendments need to be repealed, in my opinion and I believe the 17th in your stated opinion and explained in detail, by Morton.
Lysander Spooner was a Socialist, Unitarian and Anarchist! His rantings are horse manure, made somewhat thoughtful, by assuming a false premise, for practically each point he wishes to make.
Our Founders gave us a Constitution and methods to legally alter it. We are, today... Serfs, because we have not properly repealed the 16th Amendment!
As long as the people and the elected officials remain corrupt and morally bankrupt changing the Constitution would be akin to changing the location of the deck chairs on the Titanic.
