If we lived a in direct democracy, three fourths of the people in all of the states would collectively vote on the ratification of proposed amendments. In our Constitutional Republic, three fourths of the states are required to ratify proposed amendments.

In a direct democracy the Presidential candidate with the most popular votes wins the election, while in our Constitutional Republic each of the states has an election and the winner of 270 electoral votes is elected.

To lawfully change the method of electing a President the Constitution needs to be amended. If the Electoral College were to be abolished the republic created by the founding fathers would become a direct democracy.

The President is not elected in a one election, he or she is elected in elections in fifty independent states. If we allow our country to become a pure democracy the rights of a minority can compromised by the tyranny of the majority.

The Electoral College will never be abolished as long as three fourths of the states are required to give their approval.
