Elder Abuse Follow Up

Thank you for posting this rather lengthy, horror story. I implore everyone to MAKE the time to read it = reality in a nutshell ! Read & learn about real life. This is EXACTLY how it goes. Don't think it's too early because your folks can play 18 rounds of golf or you can work 18/6.......I've seen 24 yo in nursing homes.

Do some research, make your decision, then stick to the commitment. A lot of people have a mental image of lying in a clean, comfortable bed, dim lights, soft background music perhaps, & just fading away......Going out is as messy & time-consuming as coming into this world: usually bald, toothless, in diapers, etc. prepare to deal w/ it.

If you elect to die at home, don't panic & call 911. They are bound bound by law to start CPR, the hosp. will continue it & put the patient on life support systems. Good luck taking them off, sometimes have to go to court.

Don't count on much help unless you are from a big family. Ins. only pays for RN's (who do NOT fix meals, do baths, change bed linens, etc.) CNA's/Home Health Aides (who are the most help...ie: baths, meals, laundry, etc.) are either paid for 2-3 hrs/day or not at all by ins. co's. This is a big expense on you.

Then you have to take into consideration your physical health. You (or the dying person) might have to be lifted into a wheelchair for baths/bed changes, fed by hand, special meals, broken sleep habits, etc. Ready to change diapers ?

On the other hand, you are NOT a prisoner ! The hospital cannot keep you against your wishes. Nor can they coerce you into a nursing home. They ask if you are prepared to take responsibility to relieve their responsibility. Lie if you have to & worry about recruiting extra help later.

Learn the difference between "rehab" & nursing home, consider "assisted living" for a while. And learn about "respite" care.

We have slowly relinquished our obligations over the years & expected more & more to be done FOR us. My "ancient" Watkins cookbook has a section on "cooking for invalids". When was the last time you ever even gave it any consideration ?

Please make yourselves as informed about dying as you are about living then you can avoid having to deal w/ lawsuits.
