Contrary to what you have been taught the united States is not a country it is a union of 50 separate and independent states.
In 1783 at the Treaty of Paris, Great Britain acknowledged that the 13 British Colonies were separate and independent nations.
Each of the states were similar to the countries that belong to the European Union. All power of our government and the European Union was derived from the consent of the people of the member states.
The Civil War was not a war between the states, it was a war against the states. The bankers and corporations that wanted a much stronger central government where they could control the economy and the states. The war was not fought to end slavery, it was in reality a second war for American Independence.
As a result the institution of slavery was abolished as well as the sovereignty of the states and the rights of the people.
