To lawfully change the method of electing a President the Constitution needs to be amended. If the Electoral College were to be abolished the republic created by the founding fathers would become a democracy.
The President is not elected in a one election, he or she is elected in elections in fifty independent states. If we allow our country to become a pure democracy the rights of a minority can compromised by the tyranny of the majority.
The Electoral College will never be abolished as long as three fourths of the states are required to give their approval.
