The Problem

  • The state of California had the highest number of veterans experiencing homelessness. There were an estimated 11,472 homeless veterans.
  • There are tens of thousands of unemployed and underemployed veterans
  • 70 of the California State Parks have been closed due to budget cuts,
  • Due to lack of funds the parks are not being adequately maintained and the risk of fires is significantly higher.
  • Due to the closure of these parks the reduction in tourism has devastated the local economies.

The Solution
  • The state could allocate a few acres on state parks and/or military bases that have been closed in order to provide low cost housing to homeless vets.
  • The rent generated would provide the State with the funds needed to re-open the parks and utilize the former military basis to benefit the retired veterans.
  • The veterans could be employed by the state to clear the brush, fight forest fires. and maintain the park.
