The founding fathers wanted to create a republic because they feared the tyranny of the majority. They understood that in a democracy the rights of the individuals would be threatened by the will of the majority.
The Constitution created a series of checks and balance to prevent the majority. In our republic the senators and the President were to be elected in indirect elections where those elected were chosen by the representatives of the people.
Only the members of the House of Representatives were chosen in direct (democratic) elections.
In Article II in the Constitution it mandates that the President shall be chosen by electors appointed the legislatures of the states. In 1824 without a Constitutional authority the states passed legislation than allowed the people to choose the electors in direct elections,
In 1813 as a result of the 17th amendment the authority of the states to appoint their senators was taken from them. The switch from an indirect election to a direct election of senators
