In the Declaration of Independence was established that the government derives its just power from the consent of the people and that when a government becomes tyrannical it is the right of the people to withdraw their consent and alter or abolish the government and create a new nation to secure the peace and happiness..

In 1861 there were eleven states that withdrew their consent and created the Confederate States of America. Secession was authorized in the Declaration of Independence and was not forbidden in the Constitution. According to the Tenth Amendment any power not granted to the government of the United States and not prohibited to the states was reserved to the states and the people,

Just like a marriage that can be dissolved,  so can the union of states.

The government was created by the states to secure the individual rights of the people and the freedom to withdraw of the union was one of the unalienable rights.
