In the Presidential election of 1796 political parties emerged and John Adams was chosen to represent the Federalists Party while Thomas Jefferson was chosen to represent the Democratic Republican Party.
The contest between these two parties ended in the election of 1820 when the Democratic Republican James Monroe ran unopposed. In election o 1824 there were four candidates all representing the Democratic Republican Party.
In some of the states the Presidential Electors were appointed by the state legislatures and in other states the electors were chosen by the people in direct elections.
Andrew Jackson won 88 electoral votes while Andrew Jackson won 99 electoral votes. In order to win the election the winning candidate needed 131 electoral votes to win the election.
At that time just states held allowed the people to vote for the candidate of their choice. Each of the electors had to choose to between Andrew Jackson and John Adams, William Crawford and Henry Clay.
In the states that held popular elections 113,122 people voted for John Adams and 151,171 voted for Andrew Jackson. Even though Jackson received a plurality of both the electoral and popular vote, but he did not receive the 131 electoral votes needed for election.
Henry Clay who received the fewest number of electoral votes withdrew from the contest and convinced his supporters to cast the votes for John Adams with the understanding that Adams would appoint him as the Secretary of State.
As a result of this corrupt bargain most all of the states began conducting direct popular elections. As result Jackson received nearly 500,000 popular votes than he had received in 1824.
In the election of 1828 the states dropped the requirement that votes must be property owners. Andrew Jackson promoted the direct election of the President and the abolition of the Electoral College. The Presidents that preceded Andrew Jackson believed in a republican form of government, while Jackson promoted Democracy. In 1832 the Democrat Party held their first National Convention to nominate Martin Van Buren aa their party's Vice Presidential candidate.
